The second valve is wider because it is constructed in the normal manner of a Périnet valve with passages on three sides (left, right and front).
Distin’s signature placque hides the maker's signature that is directly stamped on the bell. A possible maker might be Gautrot aîné in Paris, who used a similar valve design in a cornet that survives at the Musical Instrument Museum Edinburgh (no. 2935).
