The instrument was presumably made under the directorship of John C. Haynes, who took over the business of “Oliver Ditson Company” after Ditson’s death in 1888, employing “Bay State” as trade name. The compact design with cornet-inspired shepherd’s crook gives the instrument an elegant appearance.
