Adolphe Sax designed the "cornet à? cylindre système Sax" in two variants: with upright bell, called "cornet à cylindres forme Saxotromba de cavalerie" by Kastner (1848), and with horizontal bell or "forme horizontale," as in this instrument. Sax uses the term "cylindre" to describe his versions of the Berlin valve.
