DescriptionGeorg Karl Kloz (1723-1797) was a member of the famous violin making family of Mittenwald. This Stainer model is typical of his work.

Top: two-piece, quarter-cut spruce: medium grain; wood pin into top block on treble side of center joint; wood pin into bottom block on bass side of center joint
Back: two-piece, quarter-cut maple: prominent, narrow, horizontal curl; pin into top block on bass side of center joint; later button
Ribs: quarter-cut maple: narrow curl
Head and neck: scroll grafted onto later neck and pegbox, which in turn has been reangled at the heel; maple: narrow curl on neck and pegbox, plain on scroll
Arching: high
Varnish: dark brown

Tailpiece: tulip-shaped; rosewood; ebony saddle; mother-of-pearl eye surrounded with brass ring; later
