DescriptionThis eighteenth or nineteenth century violin is of unknown origin. The bridge, stamped Friedrich & Bro NY places it in the United States in the early 20th century.
Top: two-piece, quarter-cut spruce: very fine grain broadening toward the flanks
Back: two-piece, slab-cut maple: bird’s-eye figure; large maple dowel through back into top block on treble side of center joint; large maple dowel through back into bottom block on treble side of center joint; later ebony cap over top edge of button
Ribs: quarter-cut maple: plain; one-piece lower rib; one-piece lower rib with scored marks at top and bottom indicating center position
Head: maple: plain; tall, oval-shaped scroll
Neck: grafted: maple: medium curl
Arching: rises abruptly from edges in center bouts
Varnish: light golden
Fingerboard: ebony; thin; later
