The manufacture of musical instrument in terracotta and clay goes back to Roman antiquity. Instruments made of ceramic and porcelain were particularly popular in the nineteenth century, when ocarinas became fashionable. Meissen in Germany was a center for musical instruments made of porcelain. Geert Jacobs specializes in all kinds of musical instruments of ceramic, mainly flutes and recorders, but also horns and trumpets; he even made a barrel organ.
