DescriptionBoxwood with ivory ferrules. Simply system with 6 brass keys with square, flat covers.
When determining the age of an object, scholars rely on many sources. This clarinet has six keys, which was not common until about 1790. A clarinet by Miller, bearing the date 1770, is among the earliest known clarinets made in England. That information, combined with addresses listed in eighteenth-century business directories, made it possible for researchers to date this instrument.
