DescriptionBrass, polished and lacquered, nickel-silver (ferrules and outer slides), mother-of-pearl finger buttons, single loop, detachable bell serving as slide with ligature screw, main tuning slide at first bow, three Périnet valves (1, ½, 1½), top-sprung, spring inside hollow stem, alignment by two unequal lugs on spring anchor plate (wider lug flat and T-shaped), steel pistons, single water keys at main tuning slide and third valve slide, trigger with pull-ring at third valve, windway 3-2-1.
The firm Davis Shuman & Son, Inc., is not recorded and the patent pending has not yet been identified. However, it is most likely that the name in the signature refers to renown trombonist Davis Shuman (1912-1966), who also held an engineering degree. Shuman developed an “angular trombone,” in collaboration with the Martin Band Instruments Co. in Elkhart, Indiana. This design for a titled Trombone was protected by US patent no. 2669152 (filed February 17, 1950 and granted on February 16, 1954). The detachable bell of the present trumpet can be turned like a trombone bell to be at an angle to the valves and leadpipe; this was likely the feature to be patented.
