SignedStamped on both body joints, but not bell: ADLER & CO. / MARKNEUKIRCHEN / GERMANYDescriptionIn three pieces – bell and two body joints, as well as wooden clarinet mouthpiece. Grenadilla body with twelve nickel-silver keys and two ferrules. Conical bore with long, slightly flared bell. Keys mounted on posts.
This instrument is a modern tárogató, invented by Venzel József Schunda in Budapest, before 1900, which uses a single reed rather than the traditional Hungarian folk instrument, which used a double reed.
ProvenancePreviously a part of the Dr. Hewitt A. Waggener Collection (Los Angeles, California, U.S.A.). Later transferred to Cecil B. Leeson Collection, Muncie, Indiana. U.S.A.
