ProvenancePreviously owned and played professionally by donor's father, Frank L. Reed (1899-1984), between 1918 and 1923, while touring the U.S. and Canada on the Chautauqua summer tours with several concert bands, including the Bohumir Kryl Concert Band, the Ralph Dunbar White Hussar Concert Band, and the Al Sweet Band. This piccolo was purchased by his family about 1917 or 1918 and used by Reed in the following years when he was still in school in Bedford, Indiana. Reed owned the instrument until his death in 1984 when they were bequeathed to his son, Charles V. Reed.

Frank L. Reed worked for the C. G. Conn Company between 1937 and 1957. In 1954-56 he was President of the American Music Conference. He became Executive Vice President of the National Piano Association in Chicago, Illinois, in 1957. In 1965, he returned to Elkhart and joined the Buescher Band Instrument Company, and shortly thereafter purchased the GHW Company (a distributor of percussion instruments) from its founder, George H. Way. He continued the activity until shortly before his death in 1984. Reed was also active in several music trade organizations.
