DescriptionConical, double-reed shawm introduced into China from Central Asia with the spread of Islamic culture. Its name is a transliteration of the Arabic zurna. Hardwood body with scalloped exterior, possibly emulating bamboo nodes. Bronze bell and fittings. Historically, favored in military ensembles for its bright tone and volume.
