DescriptionGold-plated, highly engraved bugle bearing the following presentation text: "First Prize Individual Bugler Contest, Stamford, Conn Aug. 12, 1908, presented by C. G. Conn Co., New York City, Jas. A. Purdy, Mamaroneck, N.Y." Conn initially operated a store in New York City between 1898 and 1902, an enterprise that is reflected in instruments manufactured during that time marked as Elkhart/New York. For financial reasons, the store was closed, as the company underwent reorganization. Later, in 1905, another store was established at W. 48th Street, which sold Conn instruments that were not marked as Elkhart/New York. Rather, as in the case of this instrument, it is marked New York to indicate it was awarded by the store in New York. Staged as marketing events, regional competitions offered Conn the opportunity to build excitement about solo and ensemble playing, as well as exhibit goodwill by presenting high-grade examples of their products as prizes
