DescriptionBrass, double loop (one shorter and one longer loop), main tuning slide at second bow. Five closed keys played with the right hand for g-sharp, a, b-flat, b-natural, and f2, cup-shaped key heads; key shanks with ergonomically-shaped touchpieces terminate in a ring, while the center of the cupped key head has a ball that fits into this ring; ring and ball are pivoted with a screw. This sophisticated key shank/key head connection is intended to allow airtight closure. Keys pivot in pillar-mounted tubes and are guided in fork-like holders; iron flat springs riveted to key shanks.
Antonio Apparuti (1799-1845) was originally a skilled metal worker, specializing in fine weapons. In 1831, he turned to brass instrument making. This instrument is the earliest dated keyed trumpet with this sophisticated key system. Apparuti made left-handed and right-handed keyed trumpets, likely based on the customer's wishes.
