The wood rims are painted red with twelve holes drilled in each rim through which the rope passes. Twelve leather tugs adjust the calfskin head tension, each with one large and two small stars stamped into surface. It has a characteristic decorative tack design, brass ornamental plate around the suspension ring, and ivory bushing for the vent hole.
