ProvenanceDonor purchased melodeon "from Clarence and Della Schanke, October 24, 1966. They had purchased it about eight years prior to that [ca. 1958] from a Mrs. Dollinger in St. James, Minnesota. They were told that it had "belonged to Salmon P. Chase, Secretary of the Treasury in President Lincoln's cabinet." It had been transported 'by riverboat up the river to Hastings, Minnesota."
