DescriptionThis violin is a German instrument that was modified with re-cut soundholes to appear more like an Italian violin.

Top: two-piece, quarter-cut spruce: very fine grain broadening slightly toward the flanks; original patched knot hole on lower treble bout
Back: two-piece maple cut off-the-quarter: prominent, narrow curl descending from center joint; later ebony cap over upper edge of button
Ribs: maple cut off-the-quarter: prominent, narrow curl; one-piece lower rib with etched mark at bottom marking center position
Head: maple: narrow curl
Neck: maple: very narrow curl; grafted
Varnish: dark red-brown
Fingerboard: ebony; later
Nut: ebony; later
Tailpiece: ebony; later; saddle missing
Tailgut: black plastic
Pegs: four rosewood; later
