Description3 sections: upper joint, lower joint, and bell. Simple system, 12 keys, 2 rings (1 brille); wood body with conical bore; nickel-silver keys, rings, and ferrules; low B-flat lever for right thumb on back, with pad in bell; one vent hole in bell; wooden mouthpiece with socket joint.
The tárogató is an instrument that symbolizes Hungary's national identity. This "modernized" version was designed and patented by the Budapest instrument maker Venzel József Schunda (1845-1923) in 1897, who intended it to become an orchestral instrument.
