The unicorn in the signature suggests that the instrument was made in the workshop of George Potter & Co. This firm was founded as a branch of “Henry Potter, London,” in Aldershot in 1860 and existed until 1939. According to Algernon Rose, “Messrs. Potter & Co. [were] contractors to the Government for Army instruments, and exporters to distant parts, such as Japan, Siam, India, and Canada.”
