DescriptionBrass, S-shaped tubing followed by one coil, tuning slide at second bow (lower bend of S), removable leadpipe (shanks and crooks), three Périnet valves (1, ½, 1½), bottom-sprung, alignment by one key on piston (brass), windway 3-2-1

Two brass tuning shanks for B-flat and A, three brass crooks for A-flat (stamped LAB), G (stamped SOL), and F (stamped FA).

Original mahogany case, later brass cornet mouthpiece stamped “[E]MBOUCHURE RAYEE / GUILBAUT / BTE S. G. D. G. / COUESNON & CIE / 94. RUE D’ANGOULEME / PARIS / No. 1”

Although signed by John Henry Ebblewhite, a London dealer, the instrument is most likely of French origin, since all the crooks have French stamps. A likely maker is the firm of Gautrot in Paris, who advertised a similar cornet model in a catalog of 1867 as “modèle papillon.” Henry Distin offered this model in a catalog from 1857 as “Brussells” [sic] “model cornet … (Good for Amateurs).”
