A band of black cloth encircles the sides, overlapping the snakeskin. The redwood neck has an integral spike which passes through holes in the top and base of the resonator, bisecting it along the short axis. Some short lengths of silk string are wound around the base of the spike; these may be remnants of the original strings. The neck is of round cross-section, expanding to a square shape 100mm. from the top, below two holes for two dorsally-inserted pegs.
