40B Conn-queror model with Vocabell (later patented as US patent no. 1,993,714, March 5, 1935). The bottom valve cap design follows US patent 1,956,254 (April 24, 1934), filed by Harry W. Schwartz on July 30th, 1932, and related to a slot in the valve cap to facilitate removal in the event of thread corrosion. The octagonal valve casing and water key designs follow US patent 1,966,119, filed on the same day as the valve cap design by Leland B. Greenleaf (granted July 10, 1934). The latter patent covered the fluted valve casings to facilitate a good grip of the instrument in hot weather when the player’s hands are moist, and a water key that was better protected from getting damaged by obstacles, for example the player’s clothing.
