Lorenzo Sansone (1881-1975) was a professional horn player, horn teacher, author, designer and horn manufacturer. His teaching studio on Broadway in New York City doubled as an instrument workshop. This trumpet with German-type rotary valves is arranged for vertical playing, like a piston-valve trumpet. While this design is occasionally found in German trumpets (NMM 7137 and NMM 7138), it is very unusual in twentieth-century American trumpets. Sansone mainly produced horns and imported rotary valves from Germany. The valves seem to be identical with those Sansone used for his five-valve single horns. As a result, this trumpet has an unusually large bore, more suitable for horns than trumpets.
