DescriptionBrass (body), nickel silver (ferrules, valve parts, finger hooks, pull rings, water key), narrow single loop, main tuning slide at first bow, three mechanical-linkage rotary valves (1, ½, 1½), arranged for vertical playing like a piston-valve trumpet, horseshoe stop, coil-spring return, single water key at main tuning slide, windway 3-2-1.
The patent reference in the signature relates to German patent no. 1611553 for a so-called "Bach-Trompete" (Deutsches Patent- und Markenamt, no. 1611553, granted on July 21, 1950, to Kurt Scherzer in Augsburg). The aim was to create a trumpet with a new timbre, closer to that of an oboe for blending with woodwinds, and one that would allow easy playing in the high register, as required for works by J. S. Bach. These goals were achieved with a small, rapidly flaring bell of thin metal, and a small bore.
