The patent reference in the signature relates to German patent no. 1611553 for a so-called "Bach-Trompete" (Deutsches Patent- und Markenamt, no. 1611553, granted on July 21, 1950, to Kurt Scherzer in Augsburg). The aim was to create a trumpet with a new timbre, closer to that of an oboe for blending with woodwinds, and one that would allow easy playing in the high register, as required for works by J. S. Bach. These goals were achieved with a small, rapidly flaring bell of thin metal, and a small bore.
