DescriptionNewton D. Atkins, born November 24, 1867 in Chicopee, Massachusetts, to Homer W. and Martha M. Atkins. Father was farmer. In 1880 family was in Richland, IN, in 1883, in South Dakota according SD state census. Documented in Frederick, SD, and died in August, 2, 1943 in Brown County, SD.

Back: two-piece, quarter-cut maple: irregular medium curl descending from center joint
Ribs: quarter-cut maple: medium curl
Head and neck: maple: irregular broad curl; deeply cut channels in scroll and pegbox
Edging: deeply cut recurve, particularly in corners where bee sting is offset
Varnish: light brown
Fingerboard: ebony
Nut: ebony
Tailpiece: ebony; saddle does not extend fully to edge
Tailgut: black plastic
Pegs: four ebony with mother-of-pearl eyes
