It was produced by the Oberlin Makers Association, a collaborative project involving many top violin makers from around the world. The project began with a micro-CT scan taken at Cyber Optics in Minneapolis, which was reverse engineered to produce patterns and forms. The violin was started in June 2024 at the two week workshop hosted by the Chicago Violin Making School in Skokie, Illinois, during which the white violin was made. The following year, in June 2025, the freshly varnished violin was taken to Oberlin, Ohio for antiquing with the original present to copy. The Oberlin Makers Association bench copy projects overlap one another by a year, in that a new violin is being made while the antiquing of the previous year's build is occurring. The goal is to make an instrument as close to the present state of the original in terms of design, varnish, and tone.
