DescriptionThis small bugle, nicknamed the trench bugle, was manufactured for the Army under government specifications issued on April 11, 1917. Although designed for the infantry, pocket bugles were also used by other branches of the armed forces, including the cavalry. Buglers played a crucial role during World War I by sounding calls that signaled the troops when to advance, attack, charge, retreat, and muster. As a result, buglers were also frequently targeted by an enemy determined to knock out strategic battlefield communication.
