The Modular trumpet with alternate leadpipes and bells was developed by Terry Warburton and Ransalear Kay. A single valve section could be combined with several leadpipes and bells of various sizes to give the player a wider range of tonal characteristics for different playing situations in one instrument. Ultimately, the modular trumpet was a cost-saving concept.
